Funny things to ask Siri when you're bored

Funny things to ask Siri when you're bored

Sure, now that we’re deep into 2023, ChatGPT is all anyone’s talking about now. But let’s not forget about our old, trusted friend Siri. She was there way before any of this AI nonsense, and she’s never done us wrong. We still love you Siri. You’re more fun.  Let’s not forget: Siri can pretty much do anything you need from a phone. Should I bring a jacket today? Siri has you covered. Good Italian food near me? No probs. Romantic vacations in the USA? Just leave her to it.  RECOMMENDED:🎲 The best online trivia games🎧 The best podcasts to listen to right now🎥 The best movies of all time But if you didn’t know already, Siri’s not just useful for pretty much everything. She can also be a right hoot. For some reason, Siri is programmed to give some hilarious answers to very specific questions. So next time you’re bored and your friends aren’t around to entertain you, how about asking Siri some questions instead? She might just make you laugh out loud.  The best part about this quirky Siri feature is that she may give different answers to the same question, so you can ask again and again. Ask her on a date, she may tell you she doesn’t date humans. Or she may tell you she already has plans for the night. Ask her to tell you a joke or a story and she has a vault full. Pry into her personal life and you’ll be surprised by what she responds. You can even shout rude things at her to get a rise out of her, but be sure to apologize afterwards, she won’t hold a grudge. Barbie Dreamhouse Pop-Up Truck

Barbie Dreamhouse Pop-Up Truck

It's still Barbie's world and we're all just living in it. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of, according to a press release, "Barbie moving into her very first Dreamhouse," a Barbie Truck Dreamhouse is scheduled to roam through the streets of New York throughout September, offering visitors branded merch that will reignite your love for all things pink. Expect to see the truck at the Shops at Skyview at the main mall entrance on College Point Boulevard in Flushing, Queens, between 10am and 7pm on September 16. Folks in Staten Island will be treated to the experience the week after, on September 23 between 10am and 7pm at the Staten Island Mall near Barnes & Noble.  Merchandise for purchase will include branded totes, blankets, T-shirts, mugs, bottles, coasters, pouches, hats, necklaces and much more.  Although we might be all Barbie-d out following the success of this past summer’s Greta Gerwig movie about the doll, it’s important we give credit where it’s due. In fact, according to the myth, Barbie bought her very first Dreamhouse back in 1962, "before women in the United States could open their own bank accounts and when only 0.1% of young women were independent homeowners," according to a press release. Celebrations are clearly in order.

The Art of the Score

The 10th season of the New York Philharmonic's "Art of the Score" series kicks off this week with West Side Story.  As has been the case since its inception in 2013, the program features the legendary orchestra performing scores live alongside film screenings.  This year, for the first time ever, five of the six featured movies will be New York premieres, with soundtracks being performed live for the very first time in town. Those presentations include Black Panther (December 20-23), Vertigo (January 23-26, 2024) and Metropolis (February 6, 2024), among others. We are, however, particularly excited to listen to the May 17-19, 2024's presentation of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Although the orchestra has performed the film's score in the past, there's just something about the music that tickles all of our senses.  Buy tickets to the various events and learn more about them right here.

Fun fact: both texts have actually been on display at the museum since March and the staff has been turning each manuscript’s pages every three months. At the moment, according to an official press release, the Rothschild Mahzor is open to a page pertaining to Rosh Hashana. How cool! The tours, which are free to attend with museum admission, will take place on September 14, 15 and 18 between 1pm and 2:30pm. Read more about them right here.

Kicking off on May 10 through May 13 with a slew of events held concurrently in New York and Los Angeles, PEN America's 18th annual World Voices Festival will feature a ton of literary happenings sure to delight folks of all backgrounds. This year, Ta-Nehisi Coates, the award-winning author of Between the World and Me, will deliver the prestigious keynote, the annual Arthur Miller Freedom to Write Lecture. Expect him to address topics related to book censorship in schools, among others. "America has long been haunted by men who considered 'freedom of speech' a right reserved for a certain class," Coates said in an official statement. "Indeed, this current effort to drive uncomfortable literature from the public square is as old as the slave codes, as old as the gag laws. And just as old are those who understand that true free speech cannot be divorced from freedom itself." Confirmed attendees include Roxane Gay, John Irving, Sarah Polley, Imani Perry, Min Jin Lee and Ottessa Moshfegh, among plenty of others. The popular annual massive pillow fight in Washington Square Park is happening again this year on April 15. Expected to run from 3pm to 5pm, the event will be, as usual, a themed one—although no word yet on what the subject of the day will be.  Some rules to follow at the free happening: stick to soft pillows (leave down pillows at home as feathers create an unnecessary mess), don't hit too hard and never swing your camera around. You might also want to consider taking your glasses and loose jewelry off. Be careful—and have loads of fun!

A look inside the mesmerizing new ‘Basquiat x Warhol’ exhibit

There are plenty of galleries and museums in New York, all incredibly versatile and beautiful in their own right, but there's something about the Brant Foundation at 421 East 6th Street in the East Village that tugs at all the senses— especially when displaying works by the same artists that have called the neighborhood home for years throughout history. Case in point: the latest exhibit to be mounted in the space, "Basquiat x Warhol," a traveling show from Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, France, that focuses on the unique collaboration between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two figures that have all but defined the city's downtown art scene in the 1980s. Officially open on November 1 through January 7, 2024, tickets for the first set of dates of the "Basquiat x Warhol" exhibition are now on sale right here. Here are a few things to keep in mind on your visit: You'll Get to See Some Iconic Works From "Ten Punching Bags (Last Supper)" to "Felix the Cat," the new show highlights a wide variety of works that the two artists have collaborated on throughout their respective careers, each one tackling themes like colonialism, police brutality, gentrification and a vast variety of other sociopolitical issues that we are still contending with today. This beautiful 274-foot-long mural is now on display along the Hudson River

Who knew construction fences could turn into beautiful works of public art?  The latest installment of the creative Art at Amtrak program features a large-scale mural now on display along the fence surrounding Block 675 in Chelsea, wrapping around the site of the upcoming Hudson Tunnel Project, a new rail tunnel that will connect New York and New Jersey.  Photograph: Courtesy of Art for Amtrak “Re/Connections,” by artist Marisa Morán Jahn, specifically spans 274 feet along 30th Street, 235 feet along 29th Street and 201 feet along 12th Avenue, all while facing—and basically blending into—the Hudson River. According to an official press release, the artist blew colored dye on rice paper to create the mural. She then scanned and digitally manipulated the paper to add unique motifs and other layers of color to the project. "This technique echoes traditional paper cuttings inspired by her Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage," reads the official press release.  "The resulting imagery was printed on mesh vinyl and installed along the 10-foot-high fence. For Jahn, both the holes within the work and the mesh surface serve as portals connecting times and places." Photograph: Courtesy of Art for Amtrak Even more specifically, the mural seeks to comment on the site’s “former history as a key trading route and source of sustenance for animals and humans” and its future transportation role when it links two separate states. Since first launching in June 2022, the Art at Amtrak program ha

Sharon Stone on her new art exhibition and the state of US politics

Sharon Stone on her new art exhibition and the state of US politics

When I hopped on a scheduled Zoom call with iconic actress Sharon Stone earlier this month, I had every intention of picking her brain about some of her favorite restaurants, go-to bookstores and preferred parks in New York, also discussing her first East Coast art exhibition, "Welcome to My Garden," now on display at C. Parker Gallery in Greenwich, Connecticut, about an hour out of New York City. I should have known better, though: the 65-year-old Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress wanted to talk about what she wanted to talk about and I was just along for the ride.  “I painted in college and sold all of my work but for basically no money,” the Academy Award nominee says to me matter-of-factly, sitting at a desk at home surrounded by a slew of statuettes. “I never really thought I could make it as a painter in the 1970s but I thought I could make it as an actress because I was a model and was making a ton of money.” Fast-forward a few decades, iconic movie roles, endless accolades and a global pandemic that virtually shut down the world at large for over a year, and Stone, who never really stopped painting, decided to turn her guest house into an art studio to accommodate the scope of her hobby, which intensified during the pandemic.  "I took a painting to my good friend's birthday party as a present," she remembers when discussing her life post-pandemic lockdown. "She had a big party in her house with a lot of famous people and I unwrapped the painting and all these peop

NYC shares some of the funniest 311 calls it has ever received

We just uncovered the State of NYC311 20th anniversary report and, although the document dates back to March of this year, we just couldn't help but share some of the survey's findings with the city at large.  In addition to dissecting the average number of contacts per day and the ways that the 311 system has helped make New York better and safer, officials asked customer service representatives, managers and executives about some of the most memorable complaints and requests that they have received over the past two decades. RECOMMENDED: These NYC zip codes have the most neighborhood complaints The answers are absolutely hilarious, so we figured we'd list them just as they are on the report. Grab a tissue, though, because you're about to cry from laughter: 1. A cat is terrorizing someone through a screen door. (2003) 2. I’d like to file a noise complaint against my refrigerator. (2004) 3. Can you tell me the steps for boiling a live chicken? (2005) 4. Can I claim my dog as a dependent on my taxes? (2006) 5. Who won “American Idol”? (2007) 6. How long does a baseball game typically last? (2008) 7. Can I use Medicaid for my cat’s surgery? (2009) 8. Can you check if my boyfriend is married? (2009) 9. This NYC neighborhood was just voted one of the most interesting places in the U.S.

This NYC neighborhood was just voted one of the most interesting places in the U.S.

Touring company Explore Worldwide just released the results of a new study looking at U.S. locations that are tagged the most in Wikipedia articles and then analyzing them against an “interest weighting score,” basically trying to answer the question: what are some of the most interesting destinations across the US? Certainly not to our surprise, New York was ranked the most interesting city in the country but, perhaps a bit more fascinating is the fact that Gramercy Park has topped the city-specific list, with nearly 2,700 Wikipedia articles tagging it.  After all, not even all born and bred New Yorkers have access to the fenced-in, private park in the area. One of the most expensive residential areas in all of New York, Gramercy Park was recently the site of an affordable housing lottery that left plenty of people wishing to live in the neighborhood, and for good reasons: apart from the hustle and bustle of commercial midtown but close enough to all major subway lines, Gramercy Park is home to a ton of exciting restaurants, shopping destinations, cultural pursuits and more. Who wouldn't want to live here? The survey, which you can read through in full right here, also ranked the most interesting cities on a global level and, ladies and gentlemen, our very own New York landed on the top of that list as well. What a way to start our week. Just in case you were contemplating a move, here is the global top ten list of most interesting towns as generated by the study: 1. New Yor

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced that nearly 100 streets and plazas around New York City will go car-free in the next few days, offering city dwellers the chance to safely celebrate Halloween all across town. There’s a colorful new Japanese market in the Financial District

Although walking into Mitsuki, a Japanese market that already boasts a location in Greenpoint and now a second one in FiDi, feels like a visit to Japan, the new shop in the Potter Building at 38 Park Row near Beekman Street, is actually a great example of the sorts of businesses that can perhaps only properly thrive in New York. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mitsuki Japanese Market (@mitsuki.japanese.market) The plethora of product genres sold here does, in fact, cater to a particular sort of city dweller: someone interested in Japanese culture who also prefers to do all of their shopping inside a single store.  As can be glimpsed in the tour video that the shop itself has shared on Instagram, Mitsuki is filled with all sorts of interesting Japanese finds: from specialty drinks and snacks to skincare products, anime toys and stationery sets. Photograph: Courtesy of Mitsuki Japanese Market "The motto of the Japanese mini market is to bring simple happiness to people," owner Jay Cao says via email. To Cao, pure happiness comes in the form of sweets. "It's hard to imagine how a small piece of candy can bring a whole day of happiness to a child," he says. "I often seek things that can bring joy and fulfillment to other people, hoping to prolong that pure delight." Other delightful finds there include hot bento boxes (“Instead of eating in a restaurant or choosing fast food, you can quickly grab lunch here”) and specialty foods like sushi

Beloved Tel Aviv restaurant Malka is opening a NYC outpost

Tel Avivian palates of both the kosher and non-kosher variety can agree on one thing: the schnitzel at kosher eatery Malka—which oozes a delicious potato mash as soon as you cut it open—is a culinary masterpiece. And New Yorkers will soon be able to taste the dish on this side of the Atlantic as well. Famed chef Eyal Shani is set to open an outpost of the popular Israeli eatery at 161 West 72nd Street by Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side, in the space formerly occupied by his own restaurant North Miznon, on November 16.  RECOMMENDED: José Andrés talks favorite NYC restaurants, dining trends and more Malka, which joins the chef’s celebrated roster of local eateries, including HaSalon, Port Sa’id and Shmoné, will also be Shani’s very first kosher endeavor in the U.S.  Like at his other restaurants, expect the menu at Malka to change seasonally, “showcasing the flavors of Israeli cuisine with the freshest ingredients sourced locally,” according to a press release. In addition to the iconic schnitzel—which is usually served with sauerkraut, mustard and a beetroot relish—the debuting menu will feature a lamb shank, a charred beetroot carpaccio, okra in red tomatoes, grouper shawarma and eggplant sashimi, among other dishes. The destination will be closed on Friday nights through Saturday nights in celebration of the Jewish Sabbath. During the winter, though, when the sun sets earlier, indicating the end of Shabbat, Saturday night reservations will be available.   As a nod t

A giant Billy Joel exhibit is opening on Long Island next month

Given iconic artist Billy Joel's historical connection to Long Island, we are not surprised to hear that the area will be home to a giant exhibit about the artist next month. Officially opening at the Long Island Museum and Entertainment Hall of Fame's (LIMEHOF) Stony Brook museum location at 97 Main Street in Stony Brook on November 24, “Billy Joel- My Life, A Piano Man's Journey” will showcase over 50 of the artist's personal items, many donated by Joel himself and never seen in public before. Expect vintage instruments, awards, rare audio and video recordings, personal photos, memorabilia and behind the scenes clips to make up the unique exhibition and capture your attention. In addition to lending his personal items to the museum, Joel was actually very hands-on when it came to setting up the space as well, as noted by the LIMEHOF's own chairman, Ernie Canadeo, in an official statement. “Billy has been very cordial and involved in the planning, and it is appropriate the exhibit is on Long Island, where he has long been identified, written so many songs and lived most of his life,” he said. “It is a fitting tribute to Long Island’s most successful entertainer and is guaranteed to thrill his legions of fans.” Tickets for the exhibit, which is mounted a mere 90-minute car ride from midtown Manhattan, are available for purchase now right here.  And if you haven't yet snagged tickets to Joel's iconic Madison Square Garden residency shows yet, we highly suggest you look into it
