The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

It’s that time again. Every year, we ask thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the coolest spots in their cities. What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun? For the sixth year running, the results are in. Over 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist, naming the neighbourhoods in their hometowns where everyone wants to be right now. Then, we narrowed down the selection with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else. To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2023, our neighbourhoods are more global than ever before. The rise and rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism has led to an explosion of brand-new community spaces, multi-purpose culture centres and more cafés than we can count on two hands. But while most of these neighbourhoods have experienced a transformation over recent years, they remain resolutely local at heart. Slick new developments and cool cafés might bring in new crowds, but neighbourhood stalwarts – from old pubs to family greengrocers – keep it real.  The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year are, therefore, places with big personalities. Each area’s diversity is reflected in its food, culture and festivals. Community is key: local

The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

No one has actually been to a speakeasy, well, unless you're 100 years old and have lived through Prohibition in the 1920s and early 1930s, that is. What we call 'speakeasies' in Hong Kong are themed bars inspired by the vestiges of the Prohibition era, bars that are intentionally hidden from plain sight, lacks signage, discreetly located in obscured entrances, and showcasing cocktails and experiences designed to look like you're going back in time.  Discovering these bars is already part of the drinking experience, and drinking at these 'hidden' gems can be a magical encounter. And while locating these 'secret' bars is not a daunting task, finding the very best is entirely a different matter. Read on to discover Hong Kong's best-disguised drinking holes and bars-within-bars that serve quality drinks that will keep you coming back for seconds. Check out our quick roundup of these venues in the reel below! Tai Ping Shan: Ultimate guide

Located in one of the oldest districts in Hong Kong, Tai Ping Shan is one of the earliest Chinese settlements in the city that was unfortunately hit by bubonic plague in the late 19th century. While some of the historical landmarks and temples still remain in the area, the street grew into a laid-back, alternative culture haven fueled by caffeine, art, and a small community of independent shop owners. During the past years, we’ve seen most of its neighbourhood art galleries and boutiques leave the spot for other locations in the city, but those spaces are now filled up by shiny new storefronts that bring new energy to the street. What We Do In The Shadows($158) ,由牛奶賓治加入了昆布高湯,帶堅果和泥土香氣。

Watch the video below for a sneak preview of the place: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Hong Kong (@timeouthk) Over the years, we’ve sadly witnessed many of our beloved watering holes shutting their doors. Blame it on the pesky pandemic and the struggles of being cut off from the rest of the world. For others, it’s the eternal battle with Hong Kong landlords. Even 001, Hong Kong’s very first hidden bar, serving the city’s thirsty souls since 2010, couldn’t escape this destiny. In 2022, it closed its inconspicuous Graham Street market location as they face the end of their lease.  A year after, the beloved speakeasy-style is back and better than ever. This time, they’ve ditched the underground scene and settled themselves above the historic Tai Kwun. Quite a fitting venue for such an iconic establishment. And just like its previous location, finding the entrance to the bar has always been a thrilling part of the drinking adventure. You’ll find yourself puzzled, scratching your head as you navigate the labyrinthine network of stairs and corridors within Tai Kwun in search of its elusive door. The doors have the exact same colour and composition as the old Tai Kwun prison. We were so perplexed that we even attempted to pull one of the original prison doors, mistakenly thinking it was entry to 001. The only distinguishing feature of their entrance is its distinctive vintage doorbell, similar to the one at the former Graham Street site. Si

Negroni Week 2023

Negroni Week 2023

With the sheer number of bars in Hong Kong, there are plenty of options to enjoy a perfect sip of Negroni. Bitter, strong, and not for the faint of heart, the Negroni is a classic cocktail that has existed since its creation in 1919. The Negroni cocktail has gained long-standing popularity worldwide thanks to the talented bartenders sharing their creations with the world. In Hong Kong, numerous venues offer an unforgettable experience with this Italian aperitivo. Moreover, this month, Negroni lovers will have even more places to choose from as the 11th edition of Negroni Week arrives in Hong Kong from September 18 to 24. Every year, leading bars worldwide participate in Negroni Week and the global charity initiative tied to the programme. The main objective of this event is to raise funds for various causes and charities. Over the past decade, this international initiative has raised more than $4 million for global causes. This year, bars and restaurants worldwide will once again come together to celebrate the iconic Negroni while supporting Slow Food's mission of promoting a fairer and more sustainable world of food and beverages. The money raised during this event will contribute to Slow Food's international strategic goals, which include the defence of cultural and biological diversity, the promotion of food and beverage education, the preservation of traditional knowledge and skills, and the advocacy for more sustainable food policies. Suit Izakaya & Sake Bar

Suit Izakaya & Sake Bar

Located on Jervois Street in Sheung Wan, Suit Coffee & Sake has transformed into a modern izakaya called Suit Izakaya & Sake Bar. It is a great choice for casual dining, whether it's for lunch or dinner. The eatery offers beautifully presented dishes that can be enjoyed alongside their selection of sake. The menu features a variety of options, starting from finger foods (otsumami) such as crispy tofu skins ($48) and shitake mushrooms on shrimp chips ($48) to vegetable side dishes like charred baby carrots ($88) and aubergine in charcoal with pistachio nuts and yoghurt dip ($118). For dinner, we recommend starting with seafood dishes like the cuttlefish blanket ($138), served on a bed of seaweed salad with tonnato-kiwi dressing. Another excellent choice is the fish mosaic, which consists of slices of half-cooked hamachi wrapped in seaweed and served with wasabi yoghurt and dashi jelly ($168). When it comes to mains, you can indulge in seasonal fish served with sansho peppercorns, grilled shishito peppers, and burnt calamansi sauce ($228). Don't miss out on their signature dish, the yellow chicken rice ($268) marinated in koji and served on a bed of crispy mushroom rice. The izakaya also offers chu-hi cocktails, highballs, and G&T. Those abstaining from alcohol can try their Berry's Fizz, an interesting mix of blueberry, yuzu, and onion with tonic.

Lobster Bar and Grill

Lobster Bar and Grill

Lobster Bar and Grill is Island Shangri-La’s legendary bar that attracts hotel guests and beckons visitors and shoppers from the nearby Pacific Place Mall. It used to be one of the most happening bars in Hong Kong and has consistently reigned as one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars. Renowned bartenders, like Agung Prabowo from Penicillin and Joe Villanueva from The Social Den, have graced its counters and left an indelible mark on its legacy. It has been quiet at Lobster Bar for some time, and its once bustling atmosphere seemed to fade into memory. But this season, the bar hosted some of the biggest names on Asia’s 50 Best Bars and introduced their new bar manager, Italian mixologist Enrico Gonzato. Hailing from the iconic Dandelyan (World’s 50 Best Bars for 2018) and The Stratford Hotel London, Gonzato possesses the alchemical prowess to breathe new life into the bar’s drink programme. Gonzato puts his own captivating twist on beloved classics like the Garibaldi, Martini, and Negroni, which draws inspiration from Double Ducks by Florentijn Hofman. Drop by this month, and check out new offerings behind the bar.

This is especially true for cities like Hong Kong, where citizens can finally leave and reenter the city without having to worry about quarantine restrictions. As we rediscover the joys of travelling and start planning our next holiday, Time Out’s annual ranking of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods is back to help you discover the most happening cities for your next destination.  This year, Time Out asked more than 12,000 people about the coolest neighbourhoods in their city. The selection is then narrowed down with the insight and expertise of Time Out’s global network of city editors and local experts who know their hometowns better than anybody else. To create and rank the final list, Time Out editors considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2022, Wan Chai ranked 22nd among the 51 coolest neighbourhoods in the world, and this year, we celebrate the vibrant Sheung Wan district, which proudly sits at the top for Asia and fifth on the list among 40 other cities in the world. Sheung Wan is one of Hong Kong’s liveliest districts and the only place in Hong Kong where you can find a mix of historic temples, antique stores, and dried seafood stalls alongside contemporary art galleries, Melbourne-style cafes, stylish boutiques, and contemporary restaurants. Hong Kong suspends classes, urges firms to WFH due to weather disruptions

Update: At 3:40pm, the Hong Kong Observatory lowered the rainstorm warning signal to Amber. By 4.45pm, the rainstorm warning has been cancelled. The government is cautioning citizens to remain vigilant as there may still be flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.  After only a few days of recovery from typhoon Saola, Hong Kong is facing severe weather conditions today, and a black rainstorm warning has been issued for the first time since October 2021. In response, the government has announced the suspension of all school classes, and companies are urged to implement T8 protocols and allow their staff to work from home. The extreme weather conditions may continue until 6pm, and firms are encouraged to adopt reasonable and flexible work arrangements. The black rainstorm warning was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 11:05pm yesterday due to heavy rain exceeding 70 millimetres per hour. As a result, commuters can expect disruptions on the road, including the suspension of most bus services and slower train intervals on MTR lines. Long Win Bus, KMB, and Citybus have suspended all bus services, with the exception of airport routes S1, S64C, and S64X, until further notice. Photograph: AFP/Matt Surrusco As for MTR operations, there are currently service disruptions on the Kwun Tong Line due to flooding near Wong Tai Sin Station. Is it still safe to eat seafood at your favourite Japanese restaurant?

Is it still safe to eat seafood at your favourite Japanese restaurant?

When it comes to food, we Hongkongers have a serious love affair with Japanese cuisine. We enjoy everything from teppanyaki, yakitori, yakiniku, and most especially sushi and sashimi. In fact, Hong Kong is Japan's second biggest seafood market after Mainland China. However, due to the release of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima, the recent ban on imported seafood products from 10 prefectures in Japan poses a significant challenge for Japanese restaurants in the city. The question on everyone’s mind is, is it still safe to eat seafood at your favourite Japanese restaurant?  While not all areas of Japan will be affected, some consumers may begin to view Japanese seafood with caution due to the news. The ban specifically targets a range of seafood products originating from Tokyo, Fukushima, Chiba, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Gunma, Miyagi, Niigata, Nagano, and Saitama. These products encompass all aquatic items harvested, manufactured, processed, or packed on or after August 24, 2023. The prohibited seafood includes live, frozen, chilled, dried, or preserved varieties, as well as sea salt and both unprocessed and processed seaweed.  Some Japanese restaurants in the city, including those with Michelin star accolades, have already implemented measures to ensure the safety of their customers even before the ban started. Sushi Saito, the Michelin-starred restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, renowned for its authentic Edomae sushi, has been sourcing ingredients from Kyushu and

Hong Kong Airport to welcome new bar Intervals on the Skybridge

Hong Kong Airport to welcome new bar Intervals on the Skybridge

It feels like it has been ages since we last saw the Hong Kong airport empty and quiet. Today, the airport is as bustling as ever, with people rushing and lining up at check-in stations to come to and fly out of the city. While some venues are still closed, including some spa establishments and local restaurants, which we eagerly await to reopen, many stores and facilities are again operating in the airport. Dining destinations serve hungry passengers waiting for their flights or killing time during their layover. Additionally, the airport now boasts new Instagrammable multimedia zones, and one of the area’s latest openings is the first checkout-free convenience store. Those looking for more things to do in the city can watch out for the opening of Intervals this month. Intervals is a new bar that aims to elevate the airport experience with artisanal drinks and food programmes set amongst the excellent vantage point of the newly opened Skybridge.  Developed by Mei Mei Song, Plaza Premium Group’s director of Global Brands and Transformation, together with The Woods’ creative director Victoria Chow, Intervals is set to soft open on June 14 at HKIA’s Skybridge. Along with unbeatable views from the Skybridge, the new venue will welcome passengers in an immersive space designed to transport them away from the hustle and bustle of the airport.  Photograph: Courtesy IntervalsPinchos The drinks programme is a real highlight of Intervals. It will feature a series of miniature drinks

The Baker & The Bottleman is now a fully operational restaurant

Simon Rogan's bakery and wine bar has recently expanded to become a fully operational restaurant, serving dinner from 6pm onwards. The two-floor venue initially opened as a bakery, where guests could grab a coffee and artisanal pastries to go, before eventually welcoming guests upstairs at The Bottleman where patrons can enjoy wine and bar snacks. Although their kitchen whipped up delicious bar pairings for their excellent wine collection, their dish menu was limited and had fewer dining tables. Photograph: Courtesy The Baker & The Bottleman Now, you can sip on natural and biodynamic wines and pair them with hearty dishes from the à la carte menu, created by executive chef Oli Marlow together with restaurant head chef Ollie Eisendhardt and bakery head chef Benjamin Lee. The refreshed menu at The Baker & The Bottleman reflects the ethos of the Simon Rogan restaurant group, where seasonality and sustainability are at the forefront. Independent growers and small-scale producers will be put in the spotlight. Photograph: Courtesy The Baker & The Bottleman Guests have the option to enjoy a three-course set menu priced at $380 or choose from the à la carte menu that features the bakery's signature breadbasket ($30) and other small plates such as beef tartare ($180) and grilled cuttlefish ($150). For those looking for filling main dishes that are great for sharing, the half-dry-aged duck ($210) is highly recommended. It is served with confit duck leg ragout, roasted parsnips, and
