Acting is a job. Even at the most elite level, Hollywood actors are still putting in work, even if, from the outside, it doesn’t look like the work the rest of us are accustomed to doing. And just like you, that means that, every once in a while, an actor is going to do something simply to collect a paycheck – and then regret it later. Case in point: Dakota Johnson. Recently, in an interview with Vanity Fair, the actress – currently set to star in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Persuasion – discussed the ‘battle’ of making the 50 Shades of Grey movie trilogy that launched her career. The casting of Johnson and co-star Jamie Dornan in the leading roles, along with Sam Taylor-Wood on directing duties, lent a veneer of arthouse credibility to the fetish literature blockbusters. But the final product was plagued with hammy dialogue and cringe-inducing sex scenes. ‘I signed up to do a very different version of the film we ended up making,’ Johnson said, expanding on 50 Shades author EL James’s insistence on having ‘a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded that certain things happen. There’s never been a better time to be a Doctor Who fan, and now we finally know when the upcoming special episodes will air on TV thanks to a new teaser trailer. While we can’t time travel straight to the dates, we can now mark our calendars as the first episode arrives on November 25, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ in other territories. Debut episode The Star Beast will focus on an alien invasion in London and the reunion of David Tennant's Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Well, it turned out that Frank Herbert’s richly imagined sci-fi epic ‘Dune’ wasn’t as unadaptable as we all thought. But in fairness to David Lynch’s beloved but flawed 1984 stab at the task, director Denis Villeneuve has the luxury of two films to cram in all its political chicanery, colonial critiquing, IMAX-scale action and massive killer sandworms. ‘Oi… Looooooooofaaa!’ That’s the sound of someone calling ‘action’ on a new movie spin-off of Idris Elba’s BBC crime series, Luther. It’s yet another project in the pipeline for the Londoner, now quite possibly the busiest man in Hollywood. With two movies currently in cinemas (Beast, Three Thousand Years of Longing), the actor/DJ/businessman/podcaster/mogul is picking up the Met Police badge again for this big-screen thriller.  The movie version of Luther has been rumoured since the show launched in 2010, but now filming has wrapped and fans won’t have long to wait until the return of the suave, zero-BS London detective. The upcoming Luther movie will be released in 2023, with an exact date yet to be announced. Acting legend and honorary Londoner Stanley Tucci is making a TV series exploring the delights of British food. Tucci is no stranger to cookery shows, having presented two seasons of Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, and releasing three cookbooks. Tucci even portrayed legendary TV chef Julia Childs’ doting husband Paul, opposite Meryl Streep in the 2009 drama Julie & Julia. Now he has his sights set on the beige buffet that is British cuisine. Fingers crossed for an episode based purely on frozen food that reminds you of school lunches. ‘I think we are going to do “Searching for the British Isles” or whatever you call it. We are going to do that next year,’ Tucci told the Dish podcast. ‘England has so much to offer, and again, you sort of want to dispel the myth of, “Oh, in England nobody eats well.” We know that’s not true. The hope is to sort of educate people as I’ve been educated by living here.’ Tucci, who lives in London, said another benefit to the upcoming series is that he ‘won’t have to fly for the most part’ and he will ‘be able to come home more often’, unlike his previous globe-trotting food shows.
