The 100 best TV shows of all time you have to watch

The 100 best TV shows of all time you have to watch

It only took about 70 years, but television is finally getting some respect. In the decades leading up to this point, TV was largely considered among the lowest forms of entertainment. It was smeared as ‘the idiot box’, ‘the boob tube’. Edward R Murrow referred to it as ‘the opiate of the masses’, and Bruce Springsteen even wrote a song about the malaise of fruitless channel surfing. Was its poor reputation deserved? Certainly, the ratio of garbage to gold was high, and though it’s hard to quantify if it was worse than any other artistic medium, the fact that it was all being beamed directly into your living room made the dreck much harder to avoid.  That’s all changed. Television is now the dominant medium in basically all of entertainment, to the degree that the only thing separating movies and TV is the screen you’re watching on. The shift in perception is widely credited to the arrival of The Sopranos, which completely reinvented the notion of what a TV show could do, and the advent of streaming has made it so that hundreds of new shows are now continually flipping the script every few years, if not months.  But that doesn’t mean everything before 1999 is pure dross. Far from it: television has been popular since World War II, after all. And while this list is dominated by 21st century programs, there are hundreds of shows that deserve credit for pushing TV forward into its current golden age. Chiselling them down to a neat hundred is tough, so we elected to leave off tal

Andaz London Liverpool Street

Andaz London Liverpool Street

4 out of 5 stars

This vibrant hotel, which neighbours London Liverpool Street station, is a hub of convenience and comfort in the heart of east London. Andaz is a ‘concept’ branch of Hyatt, with 267 rooms, ranging from the (moderately less extravagant) twin and queen-sized rooms all the way up to the lavish Andaz Design Suite which was created by the late, great Sir Terence Conran, an acclaimed ‘visionary’ of British design. The lobby is plushly decorated with velvet soft furnishings and gold detailing, making for a vibrant welcome to the hotel, but the rooms are bold, modern and exceptionally well equipped for comfort. In fact, the entire hotel is an homage to calming convenience.  Fancy a less crowd-filled evening than can be offered on the streets of Spitalfields? Andaz has got you covered. There are five restaurants to choose from inside the hotel's walls, offering everything from Japanese cuisine to afternoon tea — we enjoyed seafood paella and cocktails at Rake’s Café Bar for dinner, and a delectable breakfast buffet in the Eastway Brasserie.  Neighbourhood Spitalfields is a bustling London neighbourhood, acting as a bridge between the skyscrapers of The City and the trendy charm of the East End. It’s got fantastic shopping opportunities,  bars and restaurants, and excellent connectivity to central London, with Liverpool Street station being just a five-minute stroll from the heart of the market. TfL may soon have to refund 500,000 parking tickets

TfL may soon have to refund 500,000 parking tickets

If you’ve received a parking fine in London sometime over the last year, you could be in luck. A whopping 500,000 refunds may soon be in order for people charged for parking in ‘red route’ parking bays.  Transport for London are currently challenging a ruling made against them which bans the organisation from using CCTV to penalise motorists who park in bays on ‘red routes’.  A full-priced ticket would set you back £160 and, since October 2022, 212,712 ‘penalty charge notices’ have been issued. The money raised typically goes towards improving transport schemes such as subsiding travel for elderly Londoners, with TfL having received around £17 million in revenue from such fines over the last year. If TfL loses the case, however, a whole load of those fines could be refunded. According to the Standard, TfL argues that it relies extensively on CCTV to catch people illegally parking in bays on these routes and that without it there could be ‘significant adverse impacts’ on road safety and bus services.  The case of whether or not TfL can use CCTV has been brought to the High Court after the network operator challenged the original ban by the London Tribunals. The network operator would have to recruit hundreds of staff to monitor parking on the ground, if the ban stands.  Campaigners have said that the wording on parking regulations was changed to include bays on these routes in 2020, and many want the refund period to extended back to then. Campaigners also argue that it’s hard

Revealed: the most popular winter travel destinations in 2023

Whether you’re after a festive city break to some of Europe’s dazzling Christmas markets, or you want to forget the rain, wind and abominable temperatures altogether and get some January sun, there are plenty of fantastic travel destinations to choose from this coming winter season.  And holiday rental platform Airbnb has put in the work to find out the top trending spots this winter. Based on searches for winter travel between January 1 and September 15 2023, they’ve compiled a list of ten global destinations. At the top? It’s Hong Kong. The city is especially popular in the autumn and early winter for its moderate temperatures but low humidity. Then there’s the vibrant nightlife and abundance of exciting food – a perfect winter getaway, if you ask us. Buenos Aires, the sprawling Argentinian capital, is second on Airbnb’s winter travel list. Offering those of us travelling from the chilly northern hemisphere a much-needed dose of sun, the ‘Paris of South America’ makes for an ideal escape from the blistering cold. The best time to visit? Anytime before early January, when the Argentinian summer temperatures really start heating up.  Muang Pattaya is set to be the third most popular destination this winter, also offering travellers warm weather during the December to February period. The Thai city, which sits on the eastern Gulf coast, is known for its stunning beaches – no wonder it’s been dubbed the ‘Hawaii of the East’.  Thailand has proved particularly popular for winter

Part of the District Line is closed for three days this week

Part of the District Line is closed for three days this week

We’ve got some annoying news for anyone who frequents the District Line. Parts of the London Underground service are due to be closed for three days this week, starting from today, Thursday October 26.  Transport for London announced that the line will be closed until Sunday October 29 between Earls Court and Ealing Broadway, and Richmond and Kensington Olympia. In order to minimise delays, TfL have recommended people travel during off-peak periods where possible, and leave extra time on their journeys.  Replacement bus services, including the DL1 from Hammersmith to Acton Town, and the DL3 From Turnham Green to Richmond, are set to run, but the latter is only an early morning and late evening service.  If your usual journey is affected by these closures, TfL also recommends opting for Piccadilly Line services for Ealing Common, and London Overground services between Gunnersbury, Kew Gardens and Richmond.  There will also be no service on Saturday November 11 until 3pm, according to TfL’s website. You can read more about all the planned closures on their calendar here.  From updating our London train strikes page with all the latest information, to getting you addicted to the metro memory game, Time Out is the place to come to for all things Underground.  Did you see that one-day Travelcards in London have just been saved?  Listen to Time Out’s brilliant new podcast ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’: episode 12 with Paul Feig in Mayfair is out now. Japan has unveiled new anti-overtourism measures

Japan has unveiled new anti-overtourism measures

After nearly three years of on-and-off travel restrictions took an immeasurable toll on the tourism industry across the world, visitor numbers are now bouncing back – but in some cases, a new surge of travellers is leading to a whole new set of problems. From Bali to Amsterdam, many destinations are now implementing measures to combat overtourism. Japan is the latest country to join the growing list of travel destinations fighting back against the tourist tide. The country’s visitor numbers for September this year reached 96 percent of the 2019 figure, leading to the tourism ministry announcing an ‘overtourism prevention plan’.  The plan outlines measures to strengthen Japan’s infrastructure by boosting the number of buses and taxis. Transport services are currently overwhelmed with demand, particularly in areas that experience seasonal popularity, like ski resorts in Niseko and Hokkaido. Staggering fare prices to encourage off-peak travel has also been proposed, as well as setting up new bus services specifically for tourists.  Given that Tokyo was recently named the fastest-growing destination for digital nomads, it’s no surprise that improving infrastructure is a top priority for the tourism ministry.  The tourism ministry also outlined 11 ‘model tourist destinations’, which were selected by experts from a list of 62 entries. The destinations were chosen as they offer something different from Japan’s densely crowded metropolitan areas.  The Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern

コペンハーゲン(デンマーク) 関連記事 『Revealed: the best budget-friendly cities to visit in Europe this winter(原文)』 『ヨーロッパで最もフレンドリーな街はどこ?』

These are the countries to visit in 2024, according to Lonely Planet

Not sure where to take your holiday next year? The travel gurus Lonely Planet are here to offer a helping hand, as they’ve just released their annual Best in Travel guide for 2024.   To celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, they’re spotlighting 50 travel destinations that they recommend for 2024. The best regions, cities, sustainable and best-value destinations are all included, as well as their list of the best countries.  At the top of the list? It’s Mongolia, the landlocked nation packed with nature and wildlife in central Asia. Mongolia also scored the top spot on Time Out’s list of underrated travel destinations this year, so we can’t say we disagree. Its position in the mountains makes it one of the highest countries in the world, and its capital city Ulaanbaatar is where modern life meets traditional Mongolian culture.  India comes in second on the list, and thanks to an abundance of new flights to hubs like Delhi, Goa and Kerala from Europe and the US, it’s rapidly becoming a much more accessible place to travel.  India is perhaps one of the most gloriously varied destinations on the planet, where you can gander the Himalayas, bustle your way through markets, tour the temples and sample some of the world’s most flavoursome cuisine.  St Lucia, a gem of the eastern Caribbean, is the third country to make Lonely Planet’s recommendations for 2024 travel. A mesmerising mix of mountains and beaches are crammed onto this small island, making it a world-renowned holiday s

Now on the market: the Mayfair mansion of Princess Diana’s step-grandmother Dame Barbara Cartland

If the walls of this Mayfair mansion could talk, they’d definitely have some interesting tales. The five-storey London property was home to Dame Barbara Cartland, a world-famous romance writer who’s probably better known as Princess Diana’s step-grandmother, and it’s just gone up for sale.  28 South Street is a six-bedroom property boasting bags of Edwardian features, and it’s tucked between Park Lane and Grosvenor Square. Real estate doesn’t get much more prime than that.   According to the New York listing, the building has vast amounts of space on the lower and ground floors, meaning the reception rooms can host more than 100 people. Did someone say spacious house party? What’s more, though the house is most known for belonging to Dame Barbara, it was also the birthplace of former UK Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home. The property also features a timber staircase, decorative ceilings and a lavish basement swimming pool, sauna and bar.
