The original Somerset House was a Tudor palace commissioned by the Duke of Somerset. In 1775 it was demolished to make way for an entirely new building, effectively the first purpose-built office block in the world. Today it houses a formidable art gallery (the wonderful Courtauld), a beautiful fountain court, a terraced café and a classy restaurant. Having replaced the Hermitage Rooms and Gilbert Collection on the river side of the building in April 2008, the new Embankment Galleries explore connections between art, architecture and design with a series of temporary exhibitions; downstairs a ceremonial Thames barge illustrates the venue’s history. In summer, children never tire of running through the choreographed fountains. In recent years Somerset House has hosted outdoor film screenings and music gigs in summer and a wonderfully atmospheric ice-rink in winter.

‘The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion’

Plenty of blockbuster fashion shows have graced London’s most iconic museums and galleries, but plenty of stories remain untold, particularly when it comes to Black British fashion. This new major exhibition at Somerset House aims to correct this. Spanning from the 1970s to the present day and curated by Black Orientated Legacy Development Agency (BOLD) will show what impact Black creativity has has on British fashion and how Black creativity and style has evolved across the decades. Look out for work from the likes of Joe Casely-Hayford OBE, Chris Ofili, Maud Sulter, Rotimi Fans-Kayode, Marc Hare and Jennie Baptiste.

Skate at Somerset House

  • Ice skating

What’s a London Christmas, without Somerset House's iconic ice rink? Skate around the grand neoclassical courtyard on this huge, 900-square-metre outdoor rink, with a 40ft Christmas tree plonked in the middle for maximum Insta-potential. This year the rink will have a Swiss wintery theme thanks to Switzerland Tourism. Look out for specially curated sessions inspired by the Swiss regions of Bern, Lucerne and Valais, a new restaurant Chalet Suisse by Jimmy Garcia and an all-new skate lounge from iconic rosé brand Whispering Angel.  But, the best bit? The legendary weekend Skate Lates are back, bringing banging DJ sets from the city’s best club nights and selectors rinkside. This year slip and slide along to tracks picked an impressive line-up including Pxssy Palace, foundation.fm, Beirut Grove Collective, Donnie Sunshine and Deptford Northern Soul Club.  Wheelchair users can skate in any session as well as in dedicated wheelchair user sessions.
