The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

It’s that time again. Every year, we ask thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the coolest spots in their cities. What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun? For the sixth year running, the results are in. Over 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist, naming the neighbourhoods in their hometowns where everyone wants to be right now. Then, we narrowed down the selection with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else. To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2023, our neighbourhoods are more global than ever before. The rise and rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism has led to an explosion of brand-new community spaces, multi-purpose culture centres and more cafés than we can count on two hands. But while most of these neighbourhoods have experienced a transformation over recent years, they remain resolutely local at heart. Slick new developments and cool cafés might bring in new crowds, but neighbourhood stalwarts – from old pubs to family greengrocers – keep it real.  The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year are, therefore, places with big personalities. Each area’s diversity is reflected in its food, culture and festivals. Community is key: local

The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

No one has actually been to a speakeasy, well, unless you're 100 years old and have lived through Prohibition in the 1920s and early 1930s, that is. What we call 'speakeasies' in Hong Kong are themed bars inspired by the vestiges of the Prohibition era, bars that are intentionally hidden from plain sight, lacks signage, discreetly located in obscured entrances, and showcasing cocktails and experiences designed to look like you're going back in time.  Discovering these bars is already part of the drinking experience, and drinking at these 'hidden' gems can be a magical encounter. And while locating these 'secret' bars is not a daunting task, finding the very best is entirely a different matter. Read on to discover Hong Kong's best-disguised drinking holes and bars-within-bars that serve quality drinks that will keep you coming back for seconds. Check out our quick roundup of these venues in the reel below!

A curfew for cats? To protect endangered wildlife, the environment minister is consulting the public

A curfew for cats? To protect endangered wildlife, the environment minister is consulting the public

As federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek announced the addition of more than 40 new animals and plants to Australia’s list of threatened wildlife, she called for urgent measures to be implemented around cats, especially feral cats. Feral cats kill about 2 billion animals per year, so the federal government has drafted a proposal to tackle the feral cat problem, which has this month been released for public consultation. However, it's not only feral felines facing regulations. Domestic pet cats also contribute to the killing of native wildlife. There are about 5.3 million pet cats in Australia, and they're estimated to kill 546 million animals per year (including 323 million native animals), according to recent research by the Australian National University conducted for the Biodiversity Council, Invasive Species Council and Birdlife Australia. An estimated 71 per cent of all pet cats in Australia roam – and 78 per cent of these roaming cats hunt, according to the Invasive Species Council. Most of the wildlife that these cats kill (about 85 per cent) isn't brought home, so often pet owners aren't aware of the problem. Professor Sarah Legge of the Australian National University explains that domestic cats have impacts on native wildlife in a variety of ways: not only do they hunt, but non-desexed pet cats contribute to feral cat populations when they produce unwanted litters, and domestic cats can of course become feral cats. Australia has lost more native mammal spec

22 ways to not be a knob in Sydney

22 ways to not be a knob in Sydney

1. Don't complain about how getting to North Sydney or Parramatta is too hard and can’t your mates just meet you in the city? There's a train for that and it's quite easy. 2. Stop moving in next door to live music venues and complaining about the noise. 3. Get to the front of the line at the Gelato Messina HQ, Malibu sandwich shop or Oti' pizza absolutely ready to order, no one likes a flavour waffler.  4. Pushing your way onto a train, tram or bus without waiting for people to disembark should be a punishable offence. 5. Save your car horn for its purpose, not because the car in front of you can't hear you going "tsk" with your mouth. 6. Jog in the bike lane at Centennial Park by all means, but prepare to share, don't barge. 7. Attending a yoga class and leaving your phone on vibrate is pretty up there, especially if you let your Instagram stories play through so you can view them while you downward dog, ya dog.  8. If you're going to walk three-abreast, slowly, in the city, at lunchtime or right after work, expect some huffing and puffing behind you and move out of the way for the speed walkers. 9. Don't boast about how you'd never head north over the Bridge, despite the fact you'd willingly spend over an hour in traffic getting to Watsons Bay. 10. Swim fast if you're going to use one of the fast lanes at Prince Alfred Park Pool. Use the free play lane and flop about all you want.  11. If you eat at a food court, pick up your rubbish and put it in the bins. 12. Embrace t

Switzerland has been named the “world’s best country,” again

If you’re living in and loving Switzerland and thinking “This country is just… the best” then you’re not alone. Switzerland has just been given the rather grand title of ‘best country in the world’ after topping the annual Best Countries list for the second year running. The report (a joint project by news platform U.S. News & World Report, marketing company WPP and a business school from the University of Pennsylvania) analyses 87 countries across 73 factors, surveying over 17,000 people to determine a country’s score, including quality of life, power and entrepreneurship. It’s the sixth time Switzerland has taken the title, which is no mean feat. Canada took second place, with Sweden, Australia and the U. S. taking third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The UK managed a respectable ninth. Economic stability (including dodging some of the worst inflation rises that have battered the rest of Europe) and high quality of education were two of the reasons given for Switzerland’s table-topping. The country also scored highly in the ‘entrepreneurship’ category.  “People love our country without always knowing why,” Jacques Pitteloud, Swiss Ambassador to the U.S., told U.S. News & World Report, explaining that “what people love about us is our reliability and our predictability.” Interestingly, although Switzerland’s GDP only measured a measly 808 billion US Dollars (a drop in the ocean compared to Canada’s $2.14 trillion, the USA’s $25.5 trillion and various other big-hitting coun

Get to know Schwingen and Swiss wrestling shorts at an interactive exhibition

Get to know Schwingen and Swiss wrestling shorts at an interactive exhibition

Forget the overblown silliness of WWE – did you know that Switzerland has its own centuries-old wrestling heritage? It’s called Schwingen, it’s hugely popular across the country and a key component of the sport is, in fact, the shorts that competitors wear, as a new exhibition at Ballenberg Swiss Open-Air Museum demonstrates. These Swiss wrestling shorts allow competitors to grab, grapple with and throw their opponent, meaning they need to be incredibly strong. You can find out just how strong at Ballenberg’s ‘yanking upwards’ station, allowing visitors to grab and yank a pair of shorts for themselves to test the durability. Photograph: © Ballenberg, Swiss Open-Air Museum But there’s far more to the exhibition – brilliantly named ‘Who Wears the Trousers?’ – than just short-yanking. Ballenberg’s curators have used Swiss wrestling shorts as a springboard to delve into the rich history, traditions and crafts that have built and evolved the sport. Aside from the wrestlers themselves, a huge range of people are involved in making Schwingen what it is, such as the artisans who build the trophies and the many musicians who’ve soundtracked the public events over the centuries. ‘Who Wears the Trousers?’ tells their stories as well. Many of the exhibits are gifts from the collection of a family who know Swiss wrestling perhaps better than anyone: two-time Swiss Wrestling Champion Karl Meli and his daughter Irène, also a wrestler. But don’t think for a moment that you need to know abo

Legendary Time Out comedy editor Malcolm Hay has passed away aged 82

Legendary Time Out comedy editor Malcolm Hay has passed away aged 82

We are sorry to announce that Time Out’s hugely influential former comedy editor Malcolm Hay has passed away, aged 82. According to his stepson Tim Arthur – who took over the comedy editor role from him – he passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family. Best known as a successful theatre writer prior to working for Time Out, as comedy editor he was hugely respected by the young comics of the nascent alternative comedy scene, many of whom saw the slightly older Hay as a mentor as much as a journalist. In his 21 years at the helm of the Time Out comedy section, from 1986 to 2007, he was renowned for being supportive and caring: not just a fan of the comedy but a friend and supporter of the people performing it. Time Out’s old comedy editor has died, Malcolm Hay. He was an absolute cornerstone of the scene. More than one or two of us owe a debt of gratitude to him. He was kind. Properly kind. He wanted people to succeed and he was rarely without a smile. A rare trait for a comedy critic. — Mark Thomas (@markthomasinfo) September 7, 2023 Very sad to hear of Malcolm Hay’s passing. He was a huge supporter of stand up comedy, massively important to the London circuit and a properly nice bloke — Mx Wil Hodgson 🏳️‍⚧️ (@WilHodgson) September 7, 2023 In the pre-internet age, when Time Out was at heart a listings magazine, Malcolm’s detailed pages were the backbone of the London comedy scene, being pretty much the only way you could fi
