It’s that time again. Every year, we ask thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the coolest spots in their cities. What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun? For the sixth year running, the results are in. Over 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist, naming the neighbourhoods in their hometowns where everyone wants to be right now. Then, we narrowed down the selection with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else. To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2023, our neighbourhoods are more global than ever before. The rise and rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism has led to an explosion of brand-new community spaces, multi-purpose culture centres and more cafés than we can count on two hands. But while most of these neighbourhoods have experienced a transformation over recent years, they remain resolutely local at heart. Slick new developments and cool cafés might bring in new crowds, but neighbourhood stalwarts – from old pubs to family greengrocers – keep it real.  The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year are, therefore, places with big personalities. Song Wat is so cool that it’s become hot. The compact neighborhood, which runs between Chinatown’s main road and the Chao Phraya River, gives off very different vibes from bustling Yaowarat. It’s a lot more quiet and relaxed. Even peaceful.    Song Wat is one of Bangkok’s oldest trading quarters, established in the early 1900s after a massive fire that wiped out half of Chinatown. Its name, Song Wat, meaning “draw” in royal vocabulary, references a line drawn on an old map by King Rama V himself. A row of shophouses boasting intricate Sino-Portuguese details line the neighborhood’s main street, while religious and education establishments find homes down its narrow alleys.   Many of the original shops still peddle what they’ve been selling for a century: spices and food ingredients. However, new entrepreneurial ventures—from craft cafes to art galleries—have started taking over vacant shophouses, and many, if not all, of them feature aesthetics that respect the original structure and blend in seamlessly with older establishments. Today, Song Wat sees an intriguing mix of past and present, not to mention a camaraderie among its old and new residents —exactly how we envision a cool neighborhood.

It’s official: Mooncake season has started in Thailand, even if it’s still two and a half months before the actual Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 29th of September this year.  When we say it’s started, we’re referring to how hotels and brands have begun taking orders for one of the nation’s biggest crazes: mooncakes with a variety of stuffing (so many variations now that we’ve lost count). Like many nations with a sizable Chinese community, mooncakes are big in Bangkok, and they make A LOT of money—millions, according to the rumor mill. One of central Bangkok’s nicest parks has become even more attractive as it hosts new art installations and a lot of workshops as part of Unfolding Bangkok, a series of state-backed events that’s aimed at showcasing the many dimensions of the city through art of various kinds.  The latest to be revealed is Unfolding Bangkok: Greeting Benchakitti. Curator Angkrit Ajchariyasophon has invited five prominent local artists to create meaningful, site-specific sculptures that parkgoers can enjoy and immerse themselves in. All installations will be displayed until 23 April. Free art workshops will also be hosted every weekend.  

Bangkok’s dining scene was unexpectedly exciting this year. There were so many new openings that we sometimes couldn’t keep up. From a celebrity chef’s new venture, to an Insta-worthy dining space up in the sky, to restaurants put up by fresh talents that have just returned from abroad, these new openings have only made the city’s eating and drinking arena more diverse, interesting, and appealing.  Kudos also go to those who paved the way before them, some of which may not have survived the pandemic.  Note: Establishments are listed in no particular order.

This November sees the return of Bangkok Theatre Festival, featuring 64 productions from 61 theater crews over the course of two weeks. Watch performances by  local talents and aspiring actors at participating small theaters around Bangkok, namely River City Bangkok, GalieOasis, Lanna Ari, Yellow Lane, Sundown, Siam Scape, Nang Lerng, and Tribes Bar. Debuted in 2002, the festival is the city’s premier platform for nurturing and promoting the local theater scene,  which is small and, oftentimes, lacks funding. It doesn’t matter what you call it: Wireless Road or Witthayu. One thing remains the same. This area is far from being cheap nor chill. But Ninetails on Radio is changing that reputation—or at least, it’s trying to. Ninetails, the popular music bar in Ladprao that offers affordable drinks and live music in an artsy setting, recently celebrated its seventh anniversary by branching out downtown and opening a spinoff bar called Ninetails on Radio on the top floors of a shophouse right between All Seasons and the Rolex showroom—a very cool spot. Ladprao bars are known for their laid-back vibes and reasonably priced booze — think of pre-gentrified Brooklyn—and Ninetails on Radio is trying to bring all these to Wireless. The bar spans three floors: an eating area decorated with colorful and mismatched furniture and pop art, a glass-roofed rooftop that boasts stylish lighting, bar chairs, and live music, and another tiny rooftop that displays a sign that says “Wish You Were Here”.  Yeah, we wish we were there, too.  Ninetail on Radio also has a brunch menu, served from around 11 am on weekends. W’s Drag Brunch, which made headlines during Pride month, is back on September 23 at The Kitchen Table, the hotel’s main dining hall.  Apart from campy but ultimately fun performances from some of the city’s most glamorous drag queens, this Saturday brunch promises loads of meats, from Wagyu brisket to BBQ pork ribs to smoked chorizos, as well as seafood, carb-heavy comfort fare, and array of delectable desserts. Northern Ireland indie pop-rock band Two Door Cinema Club is bringing their all-time hits to Bangkok at BITEC this Monday, August 14. Get ready to sing and sway with tracks like 'What You Know,' 'Undercover Martyn,' and 'Something Good Can Work.' This will be their first visit to Thailand after the pandemic. Local indie band Panician will be performing as the opening act. Last-minute ticket deals start from B3,200.

Ever dreamed of walking with fish without having to dive into the ocean? Now you can at “Flock of”, an immersive exhibition at True Digital Park. At the exhibition, a school of inflatable fish-shaped balloons fly in the air, thanks to cutting-edge programmatic computer systems created and coded by leading digital experience collective bit.studio. Each fish has been programmed to imitate the actual behavior of living fish, including how they swim in a group in certain directions, and how they interact with each other. South Korean celebrity chef Edward Kwon has opened a three-month pop-up at Siam Kempinski. Moments of Love explores a variety of BL romances through four mini-films: “My Lovely Tutor” tells of the complicated relationship between a student and a private tutor; “My Ex-Boyfriend” reveals how a relationship changes between two boys; “My Heartless Boy” sees the complex relationship between an aspiring actor and his friend; and “My Crazy Romance” tells the story of two boys who met and bonded during turning points in lives. The movie features Thai actors Thitipong Sangngey and Saranvut Nittayasuthi (My Heartless Boy); Chisanupong Puangmanee and Pongsapak Rachaporn (My Crazy Romance); Ratchanon Kanphiang and Kashane Pichetsopon (My Ex-Boyfriend); and Sorawut Arunwattananunt and Napat Praphakamol (My Lovely Tutor).

Chatuchak is more of a place to shop and eat rather than to drink. But Plot Twist, a new cocktail bar on the sixth floor of the new Best Western Chatuchak hotel, is trying to change that. Thanks to its location, the bar is blessed with unblocked views of Bangkok’s new railway hub, Krungthep Aphiwat, and is only a few steps away from the world-famous Chatuchak Market (or JJ to locals).  But the views ain’t the only cool thing about this place. Head bartender Monthon Tangchum, who spent the last four years at Lennon’s, is introducing drinks made of fine liquor and infused liquids, and made using eye-popping techniques. You can get a drink inspired by the weekend market (gin mixed with coconut water and a hint of citrus) as well as by train journeys to the north (gin fused with Chiang Rai tea) and the south (gin fused with Chumphon coffee and rose apple). Drinks aren’t cheap; thankfully, they don’t taste it, either.  There are live bands on the weekends and happy hour is on the way.

Err, the casual Thai restaurant run by beloved chef couple Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones of Bo.lan fame, has found a new home at ASAI Bangkok Sathorn hotel. Priding itself on serving authentic “rustic Thai” food—the food you’d find at street kitchens around Thailand—Err churns out simple fare that has been elevated with richer flavors, fine ingredients, and pretty presentation. This is the eatery’s second outpost in Bangkok; the other one is in Thonglor.  Many of Err’s signatures have been reintroduced, including the can’t-miss deep-fried chicken skin served as a whole chicken. (Eat as is or dip in homemade sriracha sauce.) Other favorites, such as the soft and tender steamed egg topped with flavored eggplant, hot and spicy pork knuckle soup with fried shallots, and spicy red curry with pork knuckle, are also on the menu. Complement your meal with jasmine rice and side dishes such as green mango in spicy fish sauce (so delicious that we ordered two). Err gets all the flavors right—sweet where it should be and just enough spice that you can tolerate. The drawbacks? Servings are small—almost like izakaya food—and they’re far from cheap. But despite burning holes in our pocket, Err at Sathorn 12 is one restaurant that we’ll be coming back to.

Nuss Bar is the joint venture of prolific chef Thitid Tassanakhajohn and two-time Diageo World Class Thailand winner Ronnaporn Kanivichaporn. It is dressed mostly in red, from the walls, to the velvet couches, to the sleek counter bar. At night, dim lighting comes on and you can spot the bar, sitting like a gleaming red beacon, from afar. Large glass windows allow tipplers to admire Wat Pho while sipping craft cocktails (start from B390)—undoubtedly, Nuss has one of the most spectacular views in old town Bangkok.  The bar menu focuses on classic cocktails, from Negroni to New York Sour, but Ronnaporn elevates flavors with the use of local ingredients, herbal infusions, and fine liquors.

The results for the World’s 50 Best Bars are in, announced live from the very first awards ceremony in Asia at Pasir Panjang in Singapore. The highest-ranking Thai bar on the list is the Four Seasons’ BKK Social Club, which also helms the status of Asia’s best bar on this list, while Mahaniyom makes us proud with a debut at No. 19. The hotel industry is becoming increasingly exciting. Following the launch of the first World’s 50 Best Hotels 2023 list, where the Four Seasons in Bangkok came in at No. 3, the respected red-covered Michelin Guide is entering this competitive market by introducing the Michelin Key, an award aimed at recognizing outstanding hotels that meet Michelin’s standards.  MichelinMichelin Key The criteria used for ratings include the local experience the hotel offers, design excellence, the service and comfort provided, the unique character of the hotel, and the value for the money paid. Michelin currently has more than 5,000 hotels in 120 countries and territories in its pocket, but only a handful of outstanding venues will be awarded with a key. Michelin Key is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2024. The number of Keys to be given away has yet to be announced.

T-Pop, our country’s very own pop music genre, is hot right now—and not just among local teens. On Spotify alone, the platform has seen an impressive increase in the genre’s popularity in the past five years, particularly in Thailand, USA, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. It also has a following in Sweden, Germany, France, and Mexico.  Seemingly, T-Pop’s popularity coincides with the global interest in Thai BL productions. So who are Spotify’s most popular T-Pop artists? Top names include Ink Warunthorn, Billkin, The TOYS, and Tilly Birds.  In anticipation of more demand and looking at future trends, the music platform has just released a global “T-Pop Now” playlist, featuring the most played T-Pop songs, as well as new releases from both top and up-and-coming artists. This playlist will be actively promoted not only in Thailand, but also in the aforementioned markets and beyond. It is available to stream by both regular and premium members.  That’s not all. Spotify has also teamed up with GMMTV, Thailand’s biggest producer of BL content, to launch the “Why I Love You” playlist (a pun on “Y”, which is the colloquial term for the Thai BL genre in Thai). After more than six months since it called for submissions, the annual Italthai Portrait Prize has announced its three winners for 2023 in three categories: The Grand Prize, the Packing Room Prize, and the Youth Prize. What keeps us awake these days aside from nocturnal thunderstorms? The fact that Troy Sivan just dropped his new music video for the recently released “Got Me Started”, and that it was filmed entirely in Bangkok and features a number of local talents, including gender-neutral superstar PP Krit. Directed by Gordon von Steiner, who also directed Troy’s last music video for hit song “Rush”, the video portrays the young Australian star carousing about the city from day to night. You can see him strutting down the Chong Nonsi skywalk in Sathorn, roaming through Chinatown, sipping coffee with a Thai hottie, getting dolled up in a drag queen’ dressing room, and dancing on a rooftop and empty shophouse with a diverse cast of dancers in a fluid set choreographed by Sergio Reis and Mauro van de Kerkhof. Contrary to what its name suggests, this new venture offers distractions in the form of chewy bomboloni or Italian-style filled donuts.  These bombolonis come with 10 different fillings, including marmalade, strawberry, taro, and pistachio.
